“Prayer and the Empty Chair” – with Rev. Dr. Barbara Whittaker-Johns
Sometimes the word "prayer" is part of our casual speech, as in "You are in my thoughts and prayers", or "Let's pray for peace." Yet often we may use it, or hear it, as signifying an intention we deem important, without being fully conscious of what is intended. In a service last April, I briefly explored what prayer might mean if we understood the ultimate nature of reality to be relational and event-like, and I told a story from my own prayerful conversation with a chair that got stuck in a stairwell. This service is intended as a bit of a sequel, further exploring the power of those prayerful "conversations" - both for ourselves and for changing the world.
